Day 267 – It Wasn’t For Lack of Trying

A view of the beautiful San Diego harbor from the 40th floor of the Manchester Grand Hyatt. Not bad, considering I had to shoot through a smudge covered tinted window…

We tried our darndest to have a great date night but all I can say is – you’d better love the company you’re with because sometimes nothing goes right. The title says it all though, it wasn’t for lack of trying.

We started out at Mr. A’s, which is atop a 12 story building with views of the San Diego skyline and directly next to the path of incoming airplanes (day 267 runner up #1). The view was the only thing spectacular about this place. Our waiter was great, but the host staff and the management were sort of rude and the food was underwhelming at best. We were so disappointed in fact, that we decided to go to another place which we knew would have far better views; the Manchester Grand Hyatt. And again, the only thing great about our second spot at the Hyatt was the breathtaking 40th floor view of the harbor. There isn’t a better spot to view the harbor like this in San Diego (literally – it’s the highest waterfront spot). We sat for nearly 30 minutes before the table we snagged next to a window was even cleaned off. At this point we just laughed it off and enjoyed each other’s company. We finally did get served, and all was fine. However, no one goes to the Top of the Hyatt (the actual name for the lounge) for the food. Needless to say, I had plenty of time to scope out and take the photo for the day from this great vantage point.

Feeling defeated but happy, we left the Hyatt and ventured out to the waterfront and immediately noticed a couple of bumpin’ lowriders, showing off their rides and doing some crazy things with their hydraulics. I settled into a spot to try to get some pictures of them, and both drivers put on a little show for us; the highlight of the night (and day 267 runner up #2).  This driver had the front of his car bouncing 4 to 6 feet off the ground – way cool!! This shot was actually pretty terrible. I had no flash with me and it was very low light. It took a ton of processing to even get it to this point.

With blisters forming on Susan’s feet from her new hot shoes, we decided to call it a night and head back to the car. As we got to the car, I dug out my parking stub as I knew I would need to pay on the way out. I reached for my wallet – no wallet. DAMN! Everyone (or at least most people) should know that white-hot flush feeling that occurs when you realize that you’ve screwed up big time. Yep, that’s what I felt – and immediately beaded up into a nervous sweat. Well, to make a long story shot, the lounge on the 40th floor still had it, whew! At this point we just wanted to get home safe.

All is well, and we look forward to more successful date nights in the future. 🙂
