Day 219 – Day at The Races

Post for Aug. 7th, 2010

We spent our Saturday afternoon at the Del Mar horse track. It was the best day at the Del Mar races Susan and I have ever had! For one, it’s just a blast to go see the horses race and try your luck with a few small wagers, and we were able to grab some time right on the rail, next to track; close enough to hear AND feel the horses thunder by. Very exciting! One thing that I haven’t ever been able to appreciate before, because we are always so far away, is how impressive these race horses are. We have stables and corrals around us, and we see horses all the time but not rippling with muscle like this. They’re also way bigger than I thought they’d be.

To get an even better appreciation for how incredibly ripped, and in shape these hoofed super-athletes are, check this out.

HUGE BONUS:
It was totally by chance that we ended up going to the races on the day that the famous horse Zenyatta was running in the 9th race.In what might possibly be the most exciting horse race I will ever witness personally, she won for her 18th consecutive time. It was a huge deal (as we quickly found out), with a record crowd on hand to witness the event of over 35,000 people. To quote Zenyatta’s jockey Mike Smith, “If she can pull off two more, to me, she’d go down as the greatest horse of all time.

Well, the tension was thick and when the gates opened it reminded me of Seabiscuit’s race again War Admiral (phenomenal movie by the way); the crowd just held their breath and then lost their minds as they came down the final stretch. Zenyatta, apparently known as a late charger, hit the afterburners in the last turn and won by a neck; her second closest finish. It was quite something to be there for what felt like a marquee moment in horse racing history. The fact that we don’t know much about horse racing didn’t matter; I’ll probably remember it forever. A very cool experience! Here’s the race if you want to watch it:
