Day 180 – Bulls Eye

Post for June 29, 2010

There are many different kinds of “eye candy” around San Diego, but this one is of the amusement ride variety.

My neighbor Mike has a daughter who is working at the fair this year, and when he said he was headed down there tonight to pick her up from work, I thought it would be a great idea to join him and take some pictures of the rides at night. This is a more rigid approach to light painting the but the results are no less spectacular. The night-time ferris wheel or spinning ride is a popular subject for photographers, probably because the results are always pretty cool to look at.

I didn’t really want to post the usual picture of the whole ride since that’s what you’d usually see. While playing around with different crops and angles, I noticed how much it looks like a bulls eye. Plus, I like how the textures in the light come out a little more when cropping in closer.

Location and tech info:
San Diego County Fair, Del Mar Fairgrounds
A long exposure – 15 seconds at f/16, ISO 50, 24mm (tripod mounted of course)

Don’t forget the chocolate covered bacon! The ironic part is that we got some great exercise playing tennis before all of that.
