Day 99 – Olivenhain Meeting Hall

The meeting hall in Olivenhain is a familiar site for anyone living in my neighborhood. You drive by it so often that you hardly ever notice it. One night the illuminated doorway stood out to me and I mentally bookmarked it for a future photo. Windows and doorways often make great photo subjects, especially distressed and old ones.

The name of this community, Olivenhain, is German for Olive Grove. The exact date the meeting hall was completed is unknown, but the first recorded use is found in the minutes of a colony meeting held March 22, 1895. The grounds now are used for community gatherings and festivals like Oktoberfest.

California has always been such a melting pot of cultures. I think that’s one of the things I’ve always liked about it. Sites like this remind you that it hasn’t always been track homes and Starbucks. It’s hard to imagine the locals of the time saying “no hablo deutsch.”
