Day 76 – Camp Pendleton Marines

Check out our Marines at Camp Pendleton doing their thang!

You can expect to see a lot of things while driving on the freeway, but Marines out in force in Light Armored Vehicles, Humvees, Chinook helicopters, and Cobra gunships are definitely not a run-of-the-mill roadside attraction. However, it’s actually a pretty common occurrence as you transit the I-5 freeway in and out of San Diego County.

While heading back home from the OC, I noticed all the activity and was able to quickly exit the freeway on the only safe and legal place to pull over to check it out. Other times I’ve wanted to do this, I would have already gone past the exit for the scenic pullout, and there aren’t any others. It’s a nice spot with great views any time, but today the ground and skies were buzzing with all sorts of activity. This shot was actually taken from the opposite side of the freeway that the vehicles were on. I cropped out the bottom of the picture to remove the freeway and traffic. The 70-300 zoom lens and some post-cropping make it look like you’re right in the middle of the action. It’s not that much of an exaggeration though. I’d say I was about a quarter of a mile away from where when I stood to take this picture.

I never get tired of watch this sort of stuff. Love it!

this is cool! It looks like they’re running away from you. Maybe they’re afraid of that big 300mm lens?
